This 2 inch metal button was hand-made using steel button blanks and a printed design (inkjet on bond paper).The letterforms making up the button’s text are noticeably different across the design. To source the text, peers were asked to write their own names inside a notebook with either black or pink mark-making tools. In exchange for their participation, collaborators were promised a finished button. The names were then scanned digitally and then rearranged to re-write the infamous line from Angelou’s poem. With a 1:1 aspect ratio, these graphics are optimized for use with Instagram. The sub-brand had to speak to the originating brand identity while also being utilized in a way to promote a fabricated exhibition or experiential event of my choosing. “Dogma: The history of man’s best friend” was my solution to creating an exhibition experience that aligns with themes that are relevant to the Saint Louis Science Center. To create the sub-brand, I used a strong wordmark set in a blackletter typeface to convey the feeling of antiquity and ancient mystery, given that the exhibition is themed after a lengthy history of humanity and our relationship to dogs. The inclusion of an ancient Meso-American dog effigy signals to the viewer again that themes of history and antiquity are at play, but also that this artifact will be something they can see at the exhibition. The sub-brand color palette (pale yellow, blackish-brown, and reddish-brown) also correlates to the dog effigy, as art of Meso-American dogs, as well as dogs from other cultures around the world, are most often represented in the colors yellow (or cream/white), blackish-brown, and reddish-brown. Designing for my choice of a brick-and-mortar retail store, Trader Joe’s authentic, contemporary, and feel-good atmosphere was something I wanted to replicate for this package. Although they do not actually produce dog toys, I had the liberty of designing what I thought would be a realistic approach for the brand. To appeal to the primary demographic of TJ’s shoppers (mainly young and middle-aged adults), I designed a package that suggests an emphasis on consumer environmentalism while also appealing to the aesthetics of retro-revival. I achieved this by combining the use of earth tones (to suggest materiality) and layers of color (to mimic old printing processes) with vintage illustration, scalloped borders, and a chunky, serif typeface. I chose to include seven essays relating to the use of psychoactive substances. This design challenge saw that I not only practiced conventional typography skills, but also that I studied and applied skills of book layout by front matter and back matter including a preface, table of contents, and colophon as well as a front cover. Inspired by the psychedelic counterculture movement of decades past, Inner Voyage is a collection of essays in the form of a saddle-stitched booklet. With seven essays about the historical and artistic use of illicit substances such as cannabis and hallucinogenic mushrooms, this anthology boasts over 80 pages printed on 24 pound text-weight bond paper. These pages are typeset following the standard conventions for book text – aside from the generous bottom margin, which evokes a feeling of spaciousness that one may associate with feeling high. The design prompt required that the specimen be double-sided, folded twice, and feature no more than two print colors. The specimen was also required to show the typeface being used at a variety of scales, weights, and text lengths.This foldable print type specimen displays Sol Matas’s typeface “Bitter”. Printed on a cool gray, 24 pound bond paper, this multi-functional piece shows the details of the typeface as well as how it performs for long-form typesetting. To bring awareness to the issue of transgender care, this poster employs visual pun to enforce a feeling of uncomfort on the viewer and change how they may view their position of the social topic at hand. This print poster features the head-turning imagery of a female breast growing from the face of a man as if it were a pimple. The use of visual pun creates a metaphor for the viewer, assuming that they are cisgender, to understand what it may feel like to be a transgender person who suffers from chronic gender dysphoria. This imagery, combined with the phrase “you would want to fix it, too” implies that medical transition is oftentimes needed to resolve the feelings caused by gender dysphoria. This poster is aimed towards a non-trans audience to call upon cisgender individuals to support the need for gender-affirming care. The caption and QR code featured on the poster provides a call to action so that its audience may make a change about such a prevalent social and political issue. The QR code on the poster links to a linktr.ee (a customizable landing page website) I created that shares information relating to transgender rights in America. The restrictions for this design challenge were very open, as the only requirements were that the posters must be vertically-oriented, of poster size, and feature the words “question” on one poster and “answer” on the other. Inspired by contemporary Japanese graphic designers such as Shigeo Fukuda, this two-poster series uses vector illustration to create the image of a glass milk bottle.
