To practice my skills in long-form typesetting, I designed and printed an anthological book containing at least five pre-written essays which all pertain to a similar subject matter of our choosing. I chose to include seven essays relating to the use of psychoactive substances. This design challenge saw that I not only practiced conventional typography skills, but also that I studied and applied skills of book layout by front matter and back matter including a preface, table of contents, and colophon as well as a front cover.
Inspired by the psychedelic counterculture movement of decades past, Inner Voyage is a collection of essays in the form of a saddle-stitched booklet. With seven essays about the historical and artistic use of illicit substances such as cannabis and hallucinogenic mushrooms, this anthology boasts over 80 pages printed on 24 pound text-weight bond paper. These pages are typeset following the standard conventions for book text – aside from the generous bottom margin, which evokes a feeling of spaciousness that one may associate with feeling high. The use of yellow-toned paper for its body and a cover-weight kraft paper for its cover invoke a feeling of organic materiality that pays homage to the natural origins of many of the drugs described within the essays.
